The Borneo rainforest is one of the most extraordinary places on Earth. Towering trees stretch toward the sky, tangled vines weave through the canopy, and every layer of the forest is alive with movement, colour, and sound. From hidden insects on the forest floor to orangutans swinging through the treetops, countless species have adapted to thrive in this remarkable habitat.

🧭 HOW THE ADVENTURE WORKS

1. The Letter
Every great journey needs a guide! You’ll begin by meeting one of our Society’s Field Explorers, who’s out in the wild and writing home about the places they explore and the wonders they discover. Read their letter in your WHAS Welcome Package, and look for their updates at the beginning of each unit section.

2. The Unit Study
This is an in-depth, STEAM-based habitat study, intentionally designed to weave together science, geography, art, history, and creative thinking. Along the way, your family will discover how ponds form, change through life stages, and meet the remarkable creatures that live there — from darting dragonflies and flashing minnows to croaking frogs and patient herons.

3. The Logbook
Your World Habitats Adventure Society Logbook is a record of your journey. Collect your habitat badges, record your questions, and capture your favourite discoveries.

🌍 WHAT YOU’LL EXPLORE IN THE BORNEO RAINFOREST UNIT STUDY (163 pages)

Section I: The Borneo Rainforest
• Discover what makes a rainforest unique with a Google Earth tour of Borneo. Then explore Rudyard Kipling’s poem Road Song of the Bandar-Log.
• Introduce tropical climates, focusing on what makes them hot, humid, and rainy throughout the year. Conduct a transpiration lab to explore how rainforests help generate and sustain their own rainfall cycle.
• Create a Rainforest Layers Flipbook to explore the different levels of rainforest life.
• Discover how energy flows through a rainforest food web and create a comic strip featuring your favourite rainforest creature.
• Investigate why the rainforest is called the “lungs of the Earth” as we explore the chemical processes involved in photosynthesis.

Section II: Wildlife Encounters
• Meet Borneo’s rainforest birds, including the rhinoceros hornbill, then design your own bird-inspired country stamp.
• Discover how orangutans are perfectly adapted for life in the treetops, then weave a cozy rainforest nest.
• Explore how the Draco lizard glides between trees, then test your own flying model.
• Investigate pygmy elephant adaptations, including how they communicate through ground vibrations, then experiment with sound traveling through the earth and examine evidence of a possible new subspecies.
• Discover how rainforest recyclers like the giant millipede keep the forest healthy, then investigate a decomposing log to uncover a hidden world of invertebrates.

Section III: Plants and People
• Explore towering dipterocarp trees and create rainforest-inspired art after studying Henri Rousseau’s jungle paintings.
• Discover the giant Rafflesia arnoldii and its unusual parasitic lifestyle, then play Symbiosis Bingo on a nature walk.
• Learn how pitcher plants trap insects, then invent your own carnivorous plant with unique adaptations.
• Investigate orchid adaptations and complete a field journal study of a Borneo orchid.
• Discover the traditions of the Dayak people and life in a longhouse, then imagine a day in their world through creative writing.

Section IV: Protecting the Rainforest
• Discover how deforestation and palm oil plantations affect Borneo’s rainforest and wildlife. Then design a sustainable plantation that balances the needs of people, animals, and the environment.
• Explore the importance of biodiversity and the factors that shape how it develops. Investigate how deeply interconnected all species are by playing “What If This Species Disappeared?”
