The World Habitats Adventure Society: Ponds Elementary Unit Study invites your family to dive into this fascinating freshwater habitat and uncover the incredible plants and animals that call it home.
🧭 HOW THE ADVENTURE WORKS
1. The Letter
Every great journey needs a guide! You’ll begin by meeting one of our Society’s Field Explorers, who’s out in the wild and writing home about the places they explore and the wonders they discover. Read their letter in your WHAS Welcome Package, and look for their updates at the beginning of each unit section.
2. The Unit Study
This is an in-depth, STEAM-based habitat study, intentionally designed to weave together science, geography, art, history, and creative thinking. Along the way, your family will discover how ponds form, change through life stages, and meet the remarkable creatures that live there — from darting dragonflies and flashing minnows to croaking frogs and patient herons.
3. The Logbook
Your World Habitats Adventure Society Logbook is a record of your journey. Collect your habitat badges, record your questions, and capture your favourite discoveries.

🌍 WHAT YOU’LL EXPLORE IN THE PONDS UNIT STUDY (167 pages)
Section I: What is a Pond?
• Create a Pond Layers Flipbook to explore the different levels of pond life.
• Start a local pond survey and learn about the natural and human forces that shape ponds.
• Discover how energy flows through a pond food web and create a comic strip featuring your favourite pond creature.
• Investigate abiotic factors, including water turbidity, and measure water clarity to explore pond health.
• Learn how ponds change over time through ecological succession and build a Pond Succession Mobile showing each stage.
Section II: Producers
• Discover how algae and phytoplankton act as the pond’s primary producers and observe phytoplankton during a microscope investigation. (Video option available.)
• Investigate submerged plants and conduct an underwater photosynthesis lab to watch oxygen bubbles form.
• Identify floating plants like duckweed, learn about Claude Monet and his Water Lilies, and create your own pond-inspired art.
• Explore emergent plants such as cattails by building a simple cattail water filter and creating a 3-D cattail art project.
Section III: Pond Life
• Study minnows and learn how body shape, mouth position, and tail shape help fish survive in ponds.
• Explore pond invertebrates, including the dragonfly life cycle, conduct a water tension lab with water striders, and go on an invertebrate scavenger hunt.
• Learn about reptiles and amphibians by studying snapping turtles and the frog life cycle, then write your own fable after reading The Frogs Who Wished for a King by Aesop.
• Discover how ducks stay warm in winter, study the hunting skills of the Great Blue Heron, and conduct a waterfowl behavior survey.
Section IV: Protecting Ponds
• Explore how invasive species disrupt pond ecosystems and create an awareness campaign to protect local waterways.
• Investigate algae blooms through hands-on experiments and runoff demonstrations, then finish the unit by becoming Pond Protectors with action steps to keep ponds healthy.
