Join us this Winter and holiday season as we explore the incredible adaptations of the Holly Tree. Inspired by Charlotte Mason, you’ll find us chasing our curiosities through our read-aloud, nature adventures, and big conversations. This Looking Glass Nature Study includes six open-and-go lesson areas to engage literature, science, outdoor studies, and the arts, filled with hands-on exploration.
Description
I. NATURE TALES
There’s nothing more powerful than storytelling to connect us and make sense of our world. Introduce our topic with our read-aloud, The Story of Holly & Ivy by Rumer Godden, and related discussion.
II. DISCOVER
Enrich your understanding as we begin to explore what holly trees look like, how they grow, holly branch anatomy, and the life cycle of a holly berry with our illustrated lesson guides, vintage watercolor posters, and a variety of activities like our Holly Trees through the Seasons journaling.
III. INVESTIGATE
Bring out your ‘looking glass’ and delve deeper into holly tree adaptations (heterophylly), the history of holly wood, and holly in folklore! Design a plant adaptation, make a paper holly wreath, send someone a vintage holly postcard, create a holly wood veneer pattern, and write your own holly-inspired story.
IV. POETRY & ARTS
Enjoy a related poetry study (with copywork), art study, and music study.
V. CREATE
Celebrate everything we’ve learned with holly cross-stitch and crochet projects.
VI. ON THE TRAIL
These nature study activities will take you outside as you go on a Winter Scavenger Hunt, learn about plant defense adaptations, and then record the observations from your walk in your new Plant Defense Nature Journal.
