![One of our favorite nature studies is a small plot survey. It's easy to set up and fascinating to explore. It's astonishing how many species of plants, insects, and evidence of wildlife you can find in one little box. It's also a wonderful way to study seasonal changes.

WHAT YOU NEED:
.
🌱Collect 4 sticks between 1 - 2 feet long
🌱Nature guide (we use the Handbook of Nature along with the Seek app on my phone)
🌱Small shovel
🌱Magnifying glass
🌱Nature journal

WHAT YOU DO:
1. Choose a spot in your yard, close to a marsh, at the beach, in the forest, or at the park. You can select one that you notice has different plant species, or pick completely at random. [Please always be aware of the wildlife in your area and avoid a space with harmful plants (i.e. poison ivy or hemlock) or insects (i.e. ticks)]
2. Lay your sticks into a box shape.
3. Start at one end of your box and begin your survey! Draw your box in your nature journal and sketch the different nature finds you come across. Study them up close with your magnifying glass and use your handbook or app to help with identification.
4. If you would like to go further, use your shovel to carefully remove a small section of vegetation and look underneath. Explore the root system of your plants and other creatures living in the soil. We did an archeological excavation last year in our backyard and found a sidewalk 1 foot underground! You just never know what you will unearth. Make sure you log any artifacts you discover too! Replace the section of vegetation when you are finished.
